Erlauzwieseler See, reservoir
Erlauzwieseler See is a reservoir near Waldkirchen in Bavaria, covering about 7.68 hectares and surrounded by rolling hills, meadows, and forests. The site features a wooden boardwalk through wetland areas, a Kneipp treatment facility with water treading pools, a children's playground with a slide tower, and a stage for performances.
The site began as a bishop-expanded fish pond in the late 1400s that served the local population for centuries. In the 1960s, the water was drained and a new reservoir was constructed to attract visitors and support recreational activities.
The lake serves as a gathering place for the local community, where families and friends spend time outdoors together throughout the year. The stage by the water hosts cultural events and performances that bring people together during the warmer months.
Two free parking areas on either side of the lake make access straightforward for visitors arriving by car. Well-marked walking and biking trails circle the water and connect to Waldkirchen, allowing visitors to explore at their own pace and adjust their route based on time available.
The water was cleaned using a two-stage system of connected ponds that allow sediment to settle before the cleaner water moves to the main lake, preventing excessive algae growth. A granite-themed garden near the water showcases different types and colors of this stone found naturally in the Bavarian Forest.
