Erdfunkstelle Neu Golm, Satellite communication station in Brandenburg, Germany
Erdfunkstelle Neu Golm is a satellite communication station in Brandenburg with a cylindrical operations building at its center. The facility features a parabolic antenna measuring 12 meters (40 feet) in diameter that processed signals at frequencies around 6 GHz for uplink and approximately 3.8 GHz for downlink operations.
Construction began in 1973 and the facility was commissioned in 1975 by the GDR's postal authority as a ground station for the Intersputnik program. It served as the commercial link through which East Germany participated in satellite exchange networks shared by Eastern Bloc nations.
The station was part of East Germany's connection to the Intersputnik network, enabling satellite communication between socialist nations. This link played an important role in exchanging television content and news across Eastern Europe.
The station sits in a flat, accessible area in Brandenburg. The grounds are largely open to view today, with the central operations building and antenna clearly visible from the perimeter.
This was the only commercial satellite ground station in East Germany and played a central role in exchanging television contributions through the Intervision network. The facility was essentially the sole gateway for direct satellite communication between East Germany and other socialist nations.
