Watchtower Katharinenberg, Watchtower in Germany
The Katharinenberg Watchtower is a former border watchtower made of reinforced concrete standing about 8.5 meters tall in Südeichsfeld. It now functions as a museum displaying exhibitions about the history of this former border facility.
The watchtower was built as part of the border installations of the German Democratic Republic to monitor the boundary between East and West Germany. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the structure was placed under protection and converted into a museum.
The tower marks a former border zone and reflects the separation that once divided German communities. Visitors today can observe how this location shaped lives on both sides of the barrier.
The tower is visible from outside and exhibitions inside can be viewed during opening hours. Wear warm clothing as interior spaces may be unheated and climbing to upper levels requires some effort.
The tower reveals through its architecture and preserved fixtures what daily life was like for those stationed at the border. Many visitors are surprised by how cramped the interior spaces were and how isolated the guards felt in their posts.
