Eselsburger Tal, Nature reserve in Baden-Württemberg, Germany

Eselsburger Tal is a nature reserve in Baden-Württemberg where the Brenz River cuts through a narrow gorge, creating limestone formations including the distinctive Stone Maidens along its path. Hiking trails and cycling routes run through the area, giving visitors access to different parts of the valley.

The area received protected status in 1983 to preserve its geological features and maintain habitats for numerous plant and animal species. This designation has shaped how the valley is managed and used by visitors today.

The scattered ruins of Bindstein Castle and the former Benedictine Abbey of Anhausen show how people settled in this valley over centuries. These sites shape the landscape today and hint at the area's long human presence.

The valley is best explored on foot or by bike, though you should be aware that some areas close seasonally to protect nesting birds. Sturdy footwear is recommended since trails can be steep and uneven in places.

The Stone Maidens rise as distinctive limestone columns carved by the river over millennia. Their striking form makes them the most photographed feature and an unmissable landmark when walking through the valley.
