Schloss Oranienstein, Baroque palace in Diez, Germany
Schloss Oranienstein is a Baroque palace in Diez built on the foundations of a former abbey and containing about 318 rooms. The interior features grand halls such as the Blue Hall and a chapel still used for concerts today.
Princess Albertine Agnes had the palace built between 1672 and 1681, while later her daughter-in-law Princess Amalie carried out further expansions from 1704 to 1709. This building phase shaped the baroque style seen today.
The palace was long a seat of the Nassau-Orange family and still shapes the character of Diez today. Its name reflects the Dutch ties of the family, who influenced the region across generations.
Visitors should register in advance by phone to join the guided tours, which provide access to selected palace sections. It works best to allow enough time to explore the rooms and historical collections at a leisurely pace.
The palace is still used by the German military today but remains partially open to the public and hosts concerts yearly. This unusual dual use makes it a place where history and contemporary life meet.
