Feldkirche

Feldkirche is a late Romanesque stone basilica standing on a hill above the Rhine valley with thick walls and rounded arches from the medieval period. The building displays the heavy construction methods of this era with its solid interior supports and characteristic vaulted ceiling.

Construction took place between 1150 and 1200 and replaced an older wooden building on the site. During the 16th-century Reformation it was converted to serve Protestant worship, a role it continues to play today.

Modern stained glass windows by Georg Meistermann bring contemporary art into the medieval interior space. Visitors can observe how abstract patterns distribute light throughout the nave and blend traditional architecture with modern design elements.

The church sits on a hillside and requires a gentle walk uphill to reach it from the surrounding area. Regular services take place throughout the year, so visitors should check ahead if planning to enter during times of worship.

An old linden tree stands on the church grounds within a historic courtyard area that many visitors overlook. The cemetery below it has been in use since the 7th century, making this place one of the longest-established community sites in the region.
