Solbad Wittekind

Solbad Wittekind is a spa complex with semi-circular building forms and a late Baroque portal in Halle. The structure houses salt water baths on the ground floor and residential apartments above, which together created a complete health resort facility.

The first facility opened in 1846, and the current structure was built between 1923 and 1925 under city building director Wilhelm Jost. This project replaced older buildings and represented a modernization of the spa for new therapeutic practices.

The interior shows works by artists from the Hochschule für Kunst und Design Burg Giebichenstein, who incorporated Art Deco elements throughout the rooms. This artistic design reflects how the place was meant to combine relaxation with aesthetic beauty.

The facility sits at the foot of Reilsberg near the Berg Zoo and is easy to locate. Since closing in 1977, the building stands as a heritage monument that can be viewed from outside, though it no longer operates as an active spa.

Friedrich Nietzsche visited this salt water spa in 1868 for medical treatment. This historical connection shows how important the place was for health cures during that period.
