Fernmeldeturm Wahnbek

The Fernmeldeturm Wahnbek is a concrete transmission tower in Rastede, Lower Saxony, standing 134 meters tall with maintenance rooms positioned at 75 and 83 meters high. It broadcasts FM radio programs today and previously carried analog television signals until digital transmission standards replaced them.

Deutsche Bundespost built this concrete tower in 1974 as part of its communication infrastructure network. Control later passed to Deutsche Funkturm, a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom, which continues to operate it.

The tower became a seasonal landmark during winter months when large electric candles and lights illuminated it brightly. This temporary decoration turned the structure into a recognizable symbol for the surrounding region and showed how utility buildings can become part of local traditions.

The tower stands clearly visible above the surrounding landscape and can be spotted from many locations around Rastede. Visitors cannot enter or climb the structure itself since it operates exclusively for telecommunications purposes.

This structure follows the standardized FMT 2/73 design plan, a construction model repeated across Germany that produced similar towers like Fernmeldeturm Freienwill. This design pattern reveals how telecommunications infrastructure was built according to unified blueprints.
