Celtic circular wall of Otzenhausen

Celtic circular wall of Otzenhausen, Celtic hillfort in Nonnweiler, Germany

The Celtic circular wall of Otzenhausen is an ancient fortified settlement built on a hilltop and surrounded by a substantial stone rampart. The enclosure covers a large area and shows traces of dwellings and work areas from Iron Age times.

The settlement developed in the first century BCE when Celtic tribes built it to serve as a fortress and administrative hub. This fortification remained significant for a long time, showing how important the location was for controlling the wider region.

The site reveals itself as a place where people once worked with metal and exchanged goods with distant communities. You can sense this trading activity in the scattered remains that archaeologists continue to discover.

A marked path guides you around the fortification with information boards explaining the history and daily life of past inhabitants. The trail is easily walkable and allows you to explore the different sections at your own pace.

The Celtic builders joined stone blocks with wooden beams and iron nails to create an exceptionally strong rampart. This technique demonstrates that the builders had sophisticated knowledge of construction and materials.
