Raue Steine, Natural monument near Wolfhagen, Germany.
Raue Steine is a group of four Buntsandstein rock formations located in Habichtswald Nature Park near Wolfhagen. These geological structures rise from the landscape at about 366 meters above sea level and form distinct rocky outcrops.
The rock formations developed approximately 243 million years ago from sedimentary deposits. Medieval quarrying activities extracted stone for local building projects and left visible marks on the rock surfaces.
The discovery of ancient petroglyphs depicting wolves and wild boars on the rocks indicates the early human presence in this northern Hesse region.
A parking area near the former Monschein restaurant along Federal Road 251 provides easy access to the site. Multiple hiking trails surround the area, allowing visitors to explore the rocks from different viewpoints.
The rock surfaces display distinctive honeycomb weathering patterns created over millions of years of natural erosion. This geological feature is characteristic of sandstone formations in this region.
