Großgarage Süd, Bauhaus multistorey car park in Halle (Saale), Germany
Großgarage Süd is a five-story car park with a steel frame structure and three moving platforms that transport vehicles horizontally between levels. The building holds 88 parking spaces and was completely renovated between 2007 and 2012, including a new spiral ramp for accessing the floors.
The car park was built between 1927 and 1929 and ranks among Germany's oldest surviving multistory parking facilities from the interwar years. Its creation came during a period when cars were rapidly increasing in number and new storage solutions became necessary.
The building shows Bauhaus principles through its simple, functional design with exposed steel beams and concrete elements that looked modern at the time. This open construction style was new then and shaped how industrial buildings looked in the following decades.
Access to the different levels is well organized through the modern spiral ramp and the open design gives good visibility while driving. Visitors should note that the platforms may operate at different times and it makes sense to check current opening hours beforehand.
The facility was originally a multi-purpose center that offered repair workshops, washing stations, courier services, and even a fuel station alongside parking spaces under one roof. This all-in-one setup was unusual for the time and allowed car owners to handle all their vehicle needs in a single location.
