Steintor, Medieval city gate in Anklam, Germany.
The Steintor is a medieval city gate in Anklam featuring a distinctive stepped gable facade built from solid stone. The structure displays three clearly visible levels and demonstrates the type of fortification that protected the city during medieval times.
The gate was built around 1300 as part of Anklam's medieval fortifications. In the 15th century, additional floors were added to increase its height and improve its defensive capabilities.
The gate has served as a museum since 1989, offering exhibitions that show how people in this region lived and worked over time. Visitors can learn about local traditions and the stories of the community through displays inside.
The monument is centrally located in Anklam and easy to reach on foot from most parts of the city. Access is well-marked and visitors can move freely around and inside the structure.
Of the four original gates that once protected medieval Anklam, only the Steintor survives today as a standing structure. This makes it a rare witness to how the city defended itself centuries ago.
