Friedrich Fröbel Museum, Educational museum in Bad Blankenburg, Germany
The Friedrich Fröbel Museum occupies the Haus über dem Keller in Bad Blankenburg, the building where Fröbel opened his first Spiel- und Beschäftigungsanstalt in 1839/40. Since 1982 it has displayed its collection here, including the third Gabe and the so-called Körperkasten as notable rarities, alongside a kindergarten room where Fröbel's play gifts are demonstrated.
Fröbel established the first kindergarten institute in this building in 1839, creating an entirely new form of child care and education. His ideas spread quickly beyond Germany and laid the foundation for kindergartens in many countries worldwide.
The museum displays how Fröbel's approach changed the way people understood early childhood and how his play materials are still used in kindergartens today. Visitors see original objects that parents and teachers used in the 19th century to support children's development.
The museum is located in a residential area and is easily accessible, though rooms are spread across several floors with stairs to navigate. It makes sense to allow enough time to view the exhibits and documents at a relaxed pace.
The museum holds two rare Fröbel items: an executed third gift and the so-called Körperkasten. Its manuscript collection includes about 235 letters by Fröbel, over 40 of his letter drafts, some 370 notes, and around 1,000 letters addressed to him.
