The lake formed naturally in a depression sealed by clay layers, becoming a protected natural monument in the Werra-Meißner-Kreis district of Hesse.
The Brothers Grimm incorporated this lake in their Deutsche Sagen collection, connecting it to tales of Frau Holle and her mythical silver castle.
Visitors reach the lake through a marked path from premium hiking trail P1, with current access recommended from Berkatal and Großalmerode directions.
The lake receives water from Godesborn-Quelle and Ziegenbach springs, maintaining a constant depth of 2.60 meters throughout its surface area.
