Glassworks Museum of the Ore Mountains

The Glassworks Museum is an industry museum housed in a former vault of Purschenstein Castle and showcases the regional glass production history spanning several centuries. The displays document the techniques, tools, and products that developed in this area over time.

The region was a center of glass production for over 800 years, with craftsmen using local materials and techniques that developed over time. The museum opened in 1996 to preserve this long tradition and share it with the public.

The collection features painted window panes from 1612 depicting biblical scenes that were originally created for the castle chapel. These works show the high level of craftsmanship that local glass artisans achieved during that period.

The museum is located in a historic building with stairs to the entrance and limited accessibility for wheelchairs. It is best to allow time for the exhibits and plan your visit to catch the regular demonstrations of traditional glassblowing techniques.

The museum features a working replica of a glass melting furnace from the Renaissance period that demonstrates how craftspeople produced clear glass centuries ago. This functioning copy allows visitors to directly observe the production process as it was historically performed.
