Rennweg, alter Handelsweg im Arnsberger Wald
The Rennweg is a hiking trail in the Haßberge that follows an ancient ridge route stretching about 57 miles (93 kilometers). It passes through forests, open fields, and rocky outcrops with wide views over the surrounding landscape.
This route was used for centuries by messengers and traders to transport messages and goods between different regions. Remnants of old castles and fortifications dot the path, showing how the area was once monitored and controlled.
The Rennweg is an ancient route that once connected traders and messengers moving through the Haßberge hills, linking different regions together. Today, walkers can follow the same paths and experience the region's history visible in old fortifications and village patterns.
The path is marked and can be divided into three sections that together require several hours of walking; it is wise to bring a map or GPS device. Small villages along the route offer places to rest and refresh, with trains available to return to the starting point.
The highest point along the way is Nassacher Höhe, offering wide views across surrounding hills and farmland. At this vantage point, remnants of old defensive structures like the Schwedenschanze and Rottenstein castle ruin can be found.
