Ofnethöhlen, Prehistoric cave complex near Nördlingen, Germany
The Ofnethöhlen consists of two sections, the Big Ofnet and Small Ofnet, situated on the outer rim of the Nördlinger Ries meteor crater.
Geologist Oscar Fraas conducted the first systematic examination of the caves between 1875 and 1876, discovering stone tools and animal bones.
Archaeological excavations uncovered human skull burials from the Middle Stone Age, arranged in red ochre and accompanied by snail shell jewelry.
The caves are accessible through a 15-minute walk from the parking area at a Roman estate, located 5 kilometers before reaching Nördlingen.
The site contains geological formations resulting from a meteorite impact that occurred 14.7 million years ago during the Upper Miocene period.
