Hochries, Mountain peak in Bavaria, Germany

Hochries is a 1569 m mountain at the northern edge of the western Chiemgau Alps in Bavaria. Dark conifer forest covers most of its flanks, with clearings and pale patches near the broad summit and open meadows below the tree line. A village with red roofs and a church spire lies at its foot.

The Hochries is reached from Grainbach by a chairlift to a middle station at 920 m, from where a cable car continues to the 1569 m summit. A transmitter of Deutsche Telekom stands on the mountain. The peak is valued by hikers and especially by paraglider and hang-glider pilots.

Locals stress the name on the second syllable, so "Hochries" sounds different from what visitors expect. The peak is the Rosenheim area's home mountain, popular with hikers and especially with paraglider and hang-glider pilots who launch from its slopes.
