Roseburg, Renaissance castle in Ballenstedt, Germany
Roseburg is a Renaissance castle set on a hill near Ballenstedt, Germany, made up of several wings, towers, and ornate balconies. The complex is built around a central courtyard and extends across terraced grounds that were shaped over multiple building phases.
A first defensive structure was built on this hill in the 12th century, though little of that original work survives today. The site was substantially rebuilt during the Renaissance and took on its current residential character over the following centuries.
The Roseburg houses one of the oldest active falconry facilities in Germany, where birds of prey are kept and trained. Visitors can watch flight demonstrations held regularly on the grounds, giving a direct sense of a practice once tied to noble life.
The grounds involve several level changes and historic stairs, so sturdy footwear is a good idea before heading up. Guided tours are available and cover different parts of the complex, which makes it easier to follow the layout of the various buildings.
The grounds contain one of the best preserved jousting yards in Europe, still used today for historical events and combat displays. Jousting yards of this size were demolished or built over in most countries, which makes this one a genuine rarity.
