Hahnenkammsee is a man-made reservoir in Heidenheim covering roughly 23 hectares of water surface. A 3-kilometer path circles the lake, offering different views of the water and the green hills that surround it.
The reservoir opened to the public on July 1, 1977, and was the first man-made lake in the region. It was completed a decade before the Altmühlsee and two decades before the larger Brombachsee.
The name refers to the lake's location on a ridge in the region. Visitors experience a quiet place where locals and travelers alike walk, fish, and relax by the water while seeking simplicity and peace.
A beach house offers changing rooms, showers, and toilets, while nearby parking spaces ease access. A grill area, boat rentals for pedal and rowing boats, plus a 3-kilometer trail with a geological educational path make visiting straightforward.
After opening, the lake drew massive crowds with thousands of cars parking along roads and fields every weekend. This popularity faded once larger lakes were built nearby, turning it into a quiet and overlooked destination today.
