Steinerne Rinne bei Hechlingen, Tuff stone channel in Heidenheim, Germany.
The Steinerne Rinne near Hechlingen is a 10-meter-long channel made of tuff stone about 1 meter wide situated near Heidenheim. The formation demonstrates the typical structure of a natural seepage spring and sits at an elevation of approximately 490 meters.
The original channel extended about 100 meters before a water pipeline was installed through the area. This intervention reduced the visible monument to its present section, leaving only a portion of the original natural formation intact.
The name comes from the distinctive stone channel that has formed through natural processes over time. Visitors can observe how mineral-rich water and living organisms interact at this location to shape the surrounding stone.
The best way to reach the site is via road ST 2384 from Hechlingen toward Heidenheim until you reach Scheckenmühle, where parking is available. From there, the location is accessible on foot through flat and easy terrain.
The water flowing through the channel is particularly rich in minerals, allowing growth of specialized mosses and algae. These organisms actively contribute to the formation of new mineral layers, showing how nature continuously creates new structures.
