Historical Museum Bamberg

The Historical Museum Bamberg occupies the Alte Hofhaltung, a Renaissance palace with an arcaded courtyard next to the cathedral in the city center. The building houses collections of stone sculptures, crafted objects, and clocks that document regional history from antiquity through modern times.

The museum originated from the art collection of Vicar Joseph Hemmerlein, which led to its founding in 1838 and was initially housed in Michaelsberg Abbey. Later, it relocated to the Alte Hofhaltung, where it preserves the region's history through its accumulated objects.

The collections showcase regional craftsmanship and artistic traditions through furniture, ceramics, and textiles that reflect how people lived in earlier times. These objects demonstrate the skills and knowledge that shaped daily life in Bamberg across centuries.

The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday, allowing visitors plenty of time to explore its various sections at a leisurely pace. It is easily accessible on foot and centrally located, making it simple to combine a visit with a walk through the historic old town.

The museum houses a nature cabinet from the Age of Enlightenment with a dedicated bird hall displaying preserved animal specimens in classical display cases. This collection reveals how past scholars documented and preserved the natural world.
