St. Laurentius, Catholic parish church in Wismar, Germany
St. Laurentius is a Catholic parish church in Wismar topped by a 37-meter brick tower that marks the southeastern edge of the old town. The building displays Romanesque Revival features including arcading and pilasters that emphasize its solid construction.
The church was dedicated in 1902 and was only the fifth Catholic church built in Mecklenburg after the Reformation. It received its first bells just a few years later from Countess Mary von Bothmer as a gift.
The three round-arched windows created in 1948 show religious subjects in colored glass that shape how light fills the interior. They speak to visitors through images of faith and devotion that transcend time.
Inside you will find a Marian chapel from 1979 that offers visitors a quiet place for reflection. There stands a statue of Mary from 1450 circled by a radiating halo.
The organ was built between 1991 and 1992 by Schuke from Potsdam and has nineteen registers with pipes of copper, tin, and wood. It is a remarkable sound installation that fills the space regularly.
