St. Josef

St. Josef is a modern church building in Ilmenau featuring exposed wooden beams that create a distinctive tent-like roof structure. The building serves the Catholic congregation of Ilmenau and approximately 30 surrounding villages as part of the St. Elisabeth Arnstadt parish.

The Catholic community in Ilmenau held masses starting in 1896 at the Gasthof zum Deutschen Kaiser, a local inn where they gathered before having their own building. The later construction of this dedicated church space allowed the growing congregation to expand their religious practices.

The church serves as a gathering place for the Catholic Student Community, who hold regular meetings and events within its walls. Saint Thomas More is honored as the patron saint of this group, shaping the spiritual character of the community.

The church is located in central Ilmenau and is easily accessible on foot from the town center. Visitors should plan their visit around regular service times and respect any private events that may be taking place.

The building was completed in 1983 with rare approval from East German authorities, making it one of the few churches constructed during that period in the eastern part of the country. This authorization was exceptional and demonstrates the significance of this construction project at a time when religious building projects faced considerable restrictions.
