Goldbergsee, reservoir
The Goldbergsee is a reservoir in Coburg surrounded by a 14-kilometer loop trail that connects multiple vantage points around the water. Located between the districts of Neuses and Beiersdorf, it provides views of Schloss Callenberg and adjacent wetland areas used for nature observation.
The reservoir was constructed many years ago to protect the city from flooding and store water as a safety reserve. Over time, this protective infrastructure evolved into a recreational destination while maintaining its original flood-control function to the present day.
The Goldbergsee serves as a gathering place for residents and visitors seeking outdoor recreation and connection with nature. Joggers, cyclists, families, and nature enthusiasts regularly use the area to step away from daily routines and enjoy the open landscape.
The reservoir is easily accessible by bus, train, or bicycle, with ample parking and bike stands near the beach area. The loop trail is well-maintained and suitable for walkers, cyclists, and families with children, featuring benches at regular intervals.
Near the shore stands the Ruckerthauschen, a small house connected to the poet Friedrich Ruckert, who spent formative hours there seeking inspiration for his work. This literary link adds a cultural layer to what might otherwise be simply a recreational space.
