Goldbergsee, reservoir
The Goldbergsee is a reservoir in Coburg, situated between the districts of Neuses and Beiersdorf. A loop trail circles the water and opens up views toward Schloss Callenberg, with wetland areas along parts of the shore used for observing wildlife.
The reservoir was originally built to protect Coburg from flooding and to store water as a safety reserve. Over the years, the area around it gradually became a place for outdoor recreation while keeping its flood-control role.
The Goldbergsee draws locals who come to walk, jog, or sit by the water on warm days. On weekends, the shore fills with families and people out for a slow stroll around the lake.
The area is easy to reach by bike, bus, or train, and parking as well as bike stands are available near the beach. The loop trail works well for walkers and cyclists of all levels, with benches placed along the way to stop and rest.
Near the shore stands the Ruckerthauschen, a small house linked to the poet Friedrich Ruckert, who spent time there drawing inspiration for his writing. Many visitors come just for the water and the walk, not knowing that this quiet spot has a connection to one of Germany's notable 19th-century poets.
