Hochwasserrückhaltebecken Eicherscheid, Flood control reservoir in Bad Münstereifel, Germany.
The Eicherscheid retention basin features a dam structure with a storage capacity of 900,000 cubic meters along the upper Erft River.
Built in 1975, the reservoir protects Bad Münstereifel and Euskirchen from flooding, replacing an area that experienced frequent catastrophic floods during medieval times.
The retention basin area includes information panels at Roomedräje rest stop explaining the traditional oak bark peeling practices for leather tanning.
Visitors can reach the reservoir using bus line 761 to Lingscheider Hof stop or by cycling along the Erft bike path from Bad Münstereifel.
During the 2021 flood disaster, the basin received an inflow of 130 cubic meters per second, exceeding twice the calculated ten-thousand-year flood level.
