Gustav Zeuner, Museum ship at Science Harbor, Magdeburg, Germany
The Gustav Zeuner is an iron-built vessel measuring 55 meters long that was used as a chain tugboat on rivers. The ship features a large chain gripper wheel and was equipped with special machinery to pull and move heavy loads.
The ship was built in Dresden in 1894 and then operated for many years on the Elbe River. It carried cargo between different ports until it ceased operation in 1931.
The ship is named after German engineer Gustav Zeuner and shows how important water transport was for industry in the 19th century. Visitors can see how such vessels connected factories and ports together.
The ship is located at Science Harbor and can be viewed from inside when sufficient light is available. Sturdy shoes are recommended since the stairs and passages can be narrow and steep.
The ship has two separate water turbines connected to the engine through couplings that can operate independently. This design allowed the vessel to maneuver flexibly even when not attached to chains.
