Handelshochschule Berlin, Business school and architectural heritage monument in Berlin-Mitte, Germany.
Handelshochschule Berlin at Spandauer Straße 1 is a business school building that contains a protected chapel from the Holy Spirit Hospital, now used as a ceremonial hall. The structure spans multiple floors and displays classical educational architecture typical of the early 20th century.
The school was built from 1904 to 1906 following designs by architects Cremer & Wolffenstein and opened in 1906. The institution closed in 1946 when its departments merged into the Faculty of Economics at Humboldt University Berlin.
The school granted honorary doctorates to notable individuals, including explorer Sven Hedin and legal expert Max Apt during its operational period.
The building is easy to locate along Spandauer Straße in central Berlin and is well served by public transportation. Visitors can admire the exterior and may arrange access to the interior with prior notice depending on current activities.
The interior features a working ceremonial hall derived from a former chapel of the Holy Spirit Hospital, a space with a completely different history from the school building itself. This hall is now used for ceremonies and special events, preserving religious heritage within an educational institution.
