Happurger See, Reservoir in Happurg, Germany
Happurger See is a reservoir in the Franconian landscape, surrounded by forests and meadows that open toward the water. The lake covers approximately 47 hectares and offers space for various leisure activities along its shore.
The dam was built in 1955 as a storage basin for a pumped-storage power plant, which began operating in 1958. It has served for electricity generation and energy storage for the region ever since.
The reservoir brings together local communities through outdoor activities, while maintaining strict environmental protection measures for water resource management.
Motor boats are not permitted here, but the water invites swimming in designated areas. Nearby there is also a gravel lake offering additional water recreation options.
The water level of the lake changes regularly depending on regional electricity demand, as the power plant pumps and releases water. This makes the reservoir an active part of the regional energy network, with fluctuations that are clearly visible.
