Doggerwerk in Happurg, Architectural heritage monument and mining tunnel in Happurg, Germany.
Doggerwerk is a network of eight interconnected tunnels carved through Houbirg mountain near Happurg. The passages vary in height up to about five meters and width reaching about seven meters.
Construction began in May 1944 as a concealed aircraft engine factory for BMW, designed to provide bomb-resistant production space underground. The work was halted in 1945 when American forces arrived in the area.
The tunnels serve as a place of remembrance for the workers who labored here under difficult conditions every day. The site honors their experience and sacrifice during that period.
The entrance is sealed with a secured metal door, and the interior is not open to visitors. You can view the site from the outside and examine the historical features of the entrance structure.
Only about one-fifth of the planned 120,000 square meter underground complex was actually excavated before work stopped. Remarkably, this incomplete project never began actual production operations.
