Harnack House, Research conference venue in Dahlem, Germany.
Harnack House is a conference and guest house for researchers located in the Dahlem neighborhood of Berlin, in the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district. It contains seminar rooms, dining areas, and accommodation for visiting scholars who come to work and exchange ideas.
The building opened in 1929 as a guest house for the Kaiser Wilhelm Society, intended to bring together researchers from different countries. Over the following years it became known as a meeting point for some of the most respected scientists of the time.
The building takes its name from Adolf von Harnack, the first president of the Kaiser Wilhelm Society, and this connection to early German science is still felt inside. Scholars from around the world meet here today for conferences and seminars, continuing the tradition of the original purpose.
The house is in Dahlem, a quiet part of Berlin that is easy to reach by public transport from the city center in around 30 minutes. Visitors coming from the airport or main train station should allow a bit more travel time.
Although it belongs to a research organization, parts of the building can be used for external events, which sets it apart from many other historic guest houses in Berlin. The original architecture from the late 1920s remains largely unchanged.
