Heisterholz

Heisterholz is a protected nature reserve featuring oak woodlands, wetland areas, and creek valleys set on sandy soils. Spring-fed areas scattered throughout create distinct zones where water naturally emerges and supports different plant and animal communities.

The reserve received formal protection in 2005 to safeguard critical natural habitats across North Rhine-Westphalia. This designation acknowledged the ecological value of the woodlands and wetlands and committed to their long-term preservation.

The oak and hornbeam woodlands visible here shape how locals relate to the landscape and reflect centuries of forest management traditions. Walking through these trees, you see the result of choices made about how to live alongside nature rather than apart from it.

The reserve can be explored on foot using marked wooden pathways, with an observation tower offering views across the protected land. Plan to move slowly through different sections to fully experience the variety of habitats and their wildlife.

The reserve supports rare woodpecker species including the Middle Spotted Woodpecker and Black Woodpecker, both dependent on mature oak forests. The spring-fed areas also harbor Crested Newts, a protected species requiring cold, clean water to survive.
