Heidschnuckenweg

The Heidschnuckenweg is a long-distance hiking trail in the Lüneburg Heath region that spans around 200 kilometers (124 miles) through northern Germany. The route connects different heath areas and passes through open heath landscapes, pine forests, and small villages across south-eastern Lower Saxony.

The trail was created to make the region's heath landscapes accessible and to honor the traditional Heidschnucke sheep that graze there. It has developed into a popular hiking route for visitors who want to experience the nature and heritage of this heath region.

The trail is divided into several day stages that can be tackled depending on personal pace and preference. The route follows well-marked paths, but it is not flat everywhere, so hikers should expect some hills and varied terrain.

Along the way, you regularly see the distinctive Heidschnucke sheep with their long horns grazing in the heath landscapes. This breed was raised for centuries to keep the heath areas open and remains a symbol of the region today.
