Heiligen-Geist-Hospital

The Heiligen-Geist-Hospital features red brick walls, tall pointed windows, and vaulted ceilings characteristic of northern German Gothic architecture.

Founded around 1250 as a medical facility for poor citizens, the hospital received papal protection in 1323 when construction of its current church began.

The hospital church contains 14th-century stained glass windows depicting scenes from Jesus's life, demonstrating medieval artistic techniques.

The building includes a storage cellar beneath the western section of the church that was used to store food from the hospital's agricultural estates.

A 14th-century fresco with the text 'Deo Gracias' can be read in 504 different combinations, making it a singular example in Germany.
