Gewölbe, Medieval timber-framed bridge house in Old Harbor, Wismar, Germany.
Gewölbe is a two-story timber-framed house that rests on vaulted bridge piers, allowing the Runde Grube stream to flow beneath toward the old harbor. The structure uses water and stone so that the stream passes under the building while maintaining the harbor connection.
The building was constructed in the mid-17th century on foundations dating to 1400 and initially served city officials as a wine-tasting facility. This use continued until 1823, after which the house took on new functions.
The building shows the characteristic construction style of the region, with timber framing and vaults that remain visible today. It shapes the appearance of the old harbor and reminds visitors of when such structures supported the city's trade and crafts.
The building sits directly at the old harbor and is easy to see from the street, though access to the interior is not possible. The best time to visit is during daylight when the facade and vault structure are clearly visible.
The building featured iron gates at the stream's outflow that served as a water reservoir during city emergencies. In this way, the structure could assist during fires by holding back water and providing the city with a crucial water supply.
