Baumhaus, Baroque architectural monument at Old Harbor, Wismar, Germany.
The Baumhaus is a baroque building at the Old Harbor in Wismar with symmetrical windows and carefully detailed stonework throughout its facade. The entrance features two carved stone figures known as Swedish Heads.
The structure was built in the first half of the 18th century when Wismar was still under Swedish rule. It served as a customs house where officials controlled harbor access using a floating barrier system.
The building shows the trading relationships that made this harbor city wealthy and powerful during the Hanseatic period. Its location and architecture still reveal how central commerce was to life here.
The building sits directly on the water and is easily visible from the harbor walkway. Visitors can view the facade and entrance details freely at any time since it remains publicly accessible.
The two carved stone figures at the entrance are replicas of original sculptures from the period when Wismar was under Swedish control. These copies preserve the memory of the harbor's Nordic past.
