Kruse-Speicher, Warehouse in Wismar, Germany
Kruse-Speicher is a seven-story brick warehouse located at Wismar's Old Harbor, constructed with expansive storage spaces inside. The building was later converted to hold holiday apartments, retail shops, and a cafeteria on its ground level.
The structure was built in 1940 as a grain storage facility and formed part of a series of warehouses lining the harbor. It underwent restoration over the years and received UNESCO protection in 2002 as part of Wismar's old town district.
The building's name reflects its merchant owner whose family had deep roots in Wismar's trading community. Today its red brick facade marks the harbor landscape and visitors recognize it as a defining feature of the maritime old town.
The building stands out clearly from the waterfront and the ground-floor level with the cafe is open to visitors. The site sits centrally in the old town and is easily reached on foot, with its proximity to the water creating a pleasant setting.
The building originally contained 32 silo shafts inside, each designed to hold substantial grain reserves that filled the entire interior space. While no longer visible, this internal layout shows how specialized harbor buildings were engineered for their function.
