Löwe-Speicher is a ten-story brick structure near Wismar's Old Harbor, featuring a central tower and angular expressionist design elements. The red clinker bricks and distinctive silhouette make it a recognizable feature of the harbor landscape.
Built in 1935 as a grain storage facility for the G.W. Loewe company, the warehouse became a major center for grain trade at the harbor. Its operations wound down decades later as the grain trade declined in the 1980s.
The building sits within Wismar's historic port district, where it reflects the maritime past that shaped the region. Visitors can sense how trade and shipping once dominated daily life in this corner of the city.
The building sits in an easily accessible location along the harbor and can be viewed in full from the outside. Note that as a protected monument, it is not currently open for interior visits and should be observed from the exterior.
The interior was intentionally built without intermediate floors or windows to accommodate grain storage on a massive scale. This unusual design choice preserves how warehouses of that era were engineered to maximize capacity.
