Harpener Teiche, Recreational lakes in Bochum-Nord and Bochum-Ost, Germany
The Harpener Teiche are two interconnected lakes located in Bochum-Nord and Bochum-Ost that have become a recreational area for the neighborhood. Both water bodies are surrounded by walking paths and rest areas where people can stop and observe the water and the surrounding landscape.
These lakes originated as settling ponds for the Robert Müser coal mine, where coal slurry from mining operations was processed and settled. After coal extraction stopped, the ponds gradually transformed into natural habitats that now support various bird and animal species.
These waters now serve as a gathering place where people spend time outdoors, watch birds, or walk along the shores in their leisure hours. The ponds have become part of the local neighborhood's rhythm, offering a natural escape for residents who want to slow down and connect with the environment.
The lakes can be reached from several entry points along Werner Straße, with paved pathways circling both water bodies for easy walking. The area is straightforward to explore on foot and offers plenty of spots to rest and take in the surroundings.
The water maintains a relatively constant temperature of around 20 degrees Celsius throughout the year, sourced from the deeper layers of the former mining site. This steady warmth allows certain plants and animals to thrive here that you would not find in other lakes in the region.
