Herzog-Albrecht-Kaserne, Military barracks in Münsingen, Germany
Herzog-Albrecht-Kaserne is a former military barracks in Münsingen, in the Baden-Württemberg region of southern Germany. The complex once covered a large area with multiple buildings, most of which were torn down after closure, leaving a single former storage building standing within what is now a residential neighborhood.
The site was established in 1915 by the Royal Württemberg War Ministry and remained in continuous military use through the end of World War II. It was then taken over by the Bundeswehr and continued to function as a military installation until it was finally closed in 2004.
The former barracks were a familiar landmark for the people of Münsingen, shaping how residents understood their town's identity for generations. Today, the retained storage building stands as a quiet reminder of that past within an otherwise ordinary housing area.
The site is now a residential area, so visitors can only walk along public paths through and around it. The retained former storage building is easy to spot from the street and can be seen without entering private property.
When the barracks were demolished, the rubble was not hauled away but instead packed into wire cages called gabions, which were used as design features throughout the new housing development. Visitors walking through the neighborhood can see these stone-filled structures along the paths without realizing they are made from the original buildings.
