Herzogskasten, Architectural heritage monument in Abensberg, Germany
The Herzogskasten is a six-story building in Abensberg with characteristic features of late Gothic architecture. The structure is constructed from rubble stone masonry and includes three main floors as well as three upper levels, with a vaulted cellar below.
The building was constructed between 1450 and 1480 under Duke Johann III of Abensberg. It originally served as a granary and storage facility before assuming different purposes over the following centuries.
The building now contains the Stadtmuseum Abensberg, where visitors can view collections related to local history. The exhibits show objects and information that document life in the region from early times to the present day.
The building is located at Dollingerstraße 18 and houses a museum as well as a tourist information center. Visitors can access information and view exhibitions from Tuesday through Sunday.
Dendrochronological studies in 2001 revealed that the original wooden beams date from 1480. The building preserves its late Gothic pointed-arched portal from the same period, making it a rare example of substantially intact original features.
