Holzbergturm, Steel observation tower in Malente, Germany
The Holzbergturm is a steel observation tower in Malente standing 30 meters tall with five viewing platforms. From the top you can see across Holstein Switzerland all the way to the Baltic Sea.
A wooden tower built in 1908 originally stood on this site and was dedicated to Prussian Chancellor Otto von Bismarck. It was torn down after World War I and later replaced by the current steel structure.
Information panels around the tower teach visitors about local trees and how they grow from root systems to their crowns. The location helps people experience the forested landscape of this region in a different way.
The tower is reached by a forest path from the free parking area at Grebiner Weg, where electric bike charging stations are also available. The climb and descent require some stamina, but the stairs are easy to walk throughout.
The steel structure is made of about 2500 individual parts weighing 35 tons total, with the viewing platform alone accounting for eight tons. This technical complexity is hard to notice from below, but a closer look reveals the elaborate assembly.
