Holstein Switzerland

Holstein Switzerland is a rolling rural area in Schleswig-Holstein shaped by gentle hills, dense forests, and numerous water bodies. Around 200 lakes are scattered across the landscape, creating a varied terrain of woodland and open spaces.

The region gained its name in the 19th century when the Hotel Holsteinische Schweiz opened in 1885, attracting many visitors. This rise in tourism helped establish the area as a popular destination for travelers from surrounding regions.

Small towns across the region display traditional windmills, manor houses, and castles that represent northern German architecture. These buildings shape the character of the landscape and reflect the area's past.

A network of paths connects the various lakes and forests, offering routes for hiking, cycling, and horseback riding. The flat to gently rolling terrain allows for different difficulty levels suitable for various abilities.

The Bungsberg rises 168 meters and stands as the highest point in the entire state of Schleswig-Holstein. This modest summit offers surprisingly wide views across the otherwise gentle terrain.
