Hochrheinbrücke Laufenburg, Road bridge between Laufenburg, Switzerland and Laufenburg, Germany
The Hochrheinbrücke Laufenburg is a road bridge made of prestressed concrete that crosses the Rhine and connects the Swiss and German sides of Laufenburg. The structure spans about 225 meters and uses modern engineering methods.
The structure was completed in 2004 and replaced an older crossing to reduce traffic through the medieval town centers. The new bridge allowed the historic areas to be relieved of heavy through-traffic.
The bridge joins two communities that were once a single town before political boundaries separated them. It represents the ongoing connection and shared culture between the Swiss and German sides today.
The bridge is open to vehicles and pedestrians, providing direct crossing between both border sides. Visitors can use it anytime to travel between Switzerland and Germany.
During construction, engineers had to work around different height measurement standards between Switzerland and Germany. This required creative technical solutions when building the bridge.
