Forum am Wall, Heritage monument in Mitte Bremen, Germany

Forum am Wall is a heritage monument in Mitte featuring a trapezoidal structure with two wings and three inner courtyards spread across multiple levels. Inside, visitors find reading rooms, study spaces, cafes, and a restaurant designed to serve different purposes.

The building was constructed in 1908 following Carl Börnstein's design and initially operated as the city's police headquarters. Over time it transitioned to become Bremen's central library, marking a complete shift in its purpose.

The name Wall-Forum refers to the Am Wall location and the building's 2004 conversion into a public forum. Today the former police headquarters houses Bremen's central library, a shopping passage with restaurants, and several courts, including the State Court and the Administrative Court. A small police station remains in the building.

The complex occupies a trapezoidal plot between Am Wall and Ostertorstraße, with the main entrance facing Am Wall. The library fills around 8,000 m², and the inner courtyard is divided into three smaller sections, so the wings are easiest to navigate by crossing the courtyards. A police station still operates in part of the building.

The architecture features elements reminiscent of city gates with towers and rounded arches, echoing the defensive walls that once protected Bremen. This design merges the city's medieval heritage with the practical purpose of a civic building.
