Hohenstein, Natural monument and rock formation in Wuppertal, Germany.
The Hohenstein dolomite cliff stands within a 4,450-square-meter park, featuring exposed rock structures that rise from the surrounding wooded landscape.
The rock formation dates back 390 million years to the Middle Devonian period, when it formed part of a coral reef in the Rhine-Westphalian limestone ridge.
The site holds connections to Germanic heritage, with nineteenth-century records indicating it served as a ceremonial location dedicated to the earth goddess Hertha.
Two footpaths provide access to the rock formation, while informational signs installed in 2008 detail the geological and historical aspects of the site.
The formation earned the name Teufelskanzel, meaning Devil's Pulpit, and local tales describe the rock as a Devil's writing desk.
