Hoher Stein, Observation tower and natural monument in Plauen district, Dresden, Germany.
Hoher Stein is an observation tower built on a rock formation in the Plauenschen Grund valley near Dresden, Germany. The stone structure rises roughly 12 meters and provides views across the valley and surrounding landscape beyond.
Friedrich August Frohberg built the tower in 1864 after acquiring the land and establishing an inn called Zum Hohen Stein on the site. The structure underwent major renovation in 1928 when it received reinforced walls and a new roof.
The tower displays a bust of King Friedrich August II and reflects how Dresden valued its natural surroundings during the 1800s as a place for leisure. You can sense how visitors were drawn to this spot to enjoy the landscape and escape the city.
You can explore the area on foot with footpaths around the rock formation and tower. There are resting spots and viewpoints where you can take in the surroundings.
The tower was originally built with hollow masonry on the inside, but this design was substantially changed in later years. These modifications show how the structure adapted to meet new demands.
