Hohes Wäldchen, Summit in Windeck, Germany
Hohes Wäldchen is a hill that rises 378 meters above sea level situated at the southwestern border between Windeck and Waldbröl. The terrain features open grasslands and heath areas surrounded by woodland.
The area once functioned as a military base with rocket launch facilities operated by German and American forces. It was converted into a protected nature reserve in 1999.
The name refers to the elevated woodland character of this location. You can observe how the landscape is actively managed through grazing practices that maintain the open grassland areas.
The site is accessible for walking, but strict regulations apply to visits. Dogs must remain leashed, and camping, climbing, horse riding, and drone flying are prohibited in the protected area.
The location is home to more than 500 insect species, including rare moth varieties that researchers have documented. This biodiversity emerged after the former military site was transformed into a natural habitat.
