Hedge maze Altjeßnitz

The hedge maze at Altjeßnitz is a baroque labyrinth set within a park landscape, bordered by hornbeam hedges roughly two meters tall. The winding paths form a system that spreads across the former estate grounds.

The labyrinth was built in the 1700s on the estate of the von Ende family as part of their garden design. The structure survived even though the castle was destroyed by fire in 1946.

The maze shapes how visitors experience the baroque landscape garden and reflects the elegant garden design from centuries past. The hedge layout shows how the family once entertained guests with puzzles and hidden paths.

Visitors can reach the labyrinth through the park grounds, which span several hectares and contain multiple areas. It is wise to allow time for exploration, since the winding paths require patience to navigate.

The labyrinth sits in the Mulde floodplain and shares the grounds with a church from the 1100s that still displays medieval wall paintings. This proximity links two different historical periods in a single place.
