Kahlheid, Mountain summit in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany

Kahlheid is a mountain in the Idarwald region, located between the districts of Birkenfeld and Bernkastel-Wittlich. The terrain features open meadows and forested sections that offer varying views depending on the season and your position on the slopes.

The Kahlheid lies on the boundary between the counties of Birkenfeld and Bernkastel-Wittlich, a border marked by the municipal limits of Morbach and Allenbach just below the summit. Since 1983 the Hilsbruch nature reserve has protected the northern slope, and the Quellgebiet des Idarbaches reserve, designated in 1987, covers the spring area to the south. A 107 m radio tower has stood near the summit since the late 20th century.

The name Kahlheid refers to the bare, unwooded summit ridge, in contrast to the surrounding Idar Forest. The wooded summit carries a 107 m telecommunications tower used for amateur radio, directional radio and mobile telephony, a landmark for walkers on the B269 between Morbach and Oberhambach.

The B269 runs over the eastern slopes between Morbach and Oberhambach; near the Idarbach spring, the Idarbrücke bridge carries the B422 to Allenbach and the L164 towards Deuselbach and Bäsch. From these roads the wooded summit is reached on forest tracks and paths.

A transmission tower marks the summit and is visible from far away, making it easy to spot the mountain from the surrounding landscape. This structure has been a regional landmark for decades.
